WHAT IS A HEALTHCARE DIPLOMATE?
I am often asked what a Diplomate is and the best way to explain this is to understand that in the area of teaching and research, one can attain a degree in education at a level of a Bachelor’s degree and then pursue, beyond that, a Master’s degree and then the last step being a PhD which is the highest level of training in the area of teaching and research. In the clinical and healthcare field and as practitioners, one can obtain a Bachelor’s degree, then pursue a Master’s degree and then pursue a Doctorate. There are four physicians that are licensed in the United States.
1. The Medical Doctor or Allopathic Physician (MD).
2. The Chiropractic Physician (DC).
3. The Osteopathic Physician (DO).
4. The Naturopathic Physician (ND).
Beyond this level, one can attain a board certification in a specific area to specialize in the treatment of conditions. The board certifications are considered Diplomates. In my personal level of training, I have attained a Diplomate from the American Board of Clinical Nutrition (D.A.C.B.N.) and from the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition (D.C.B.C.N.). The level of training of a physician does not make that person any better than another practitioner. It simply gives one the opportunity to provide additional options and services to obtain optimal health. As a Diplomate, I am able to provide potential patients additional testing that objectively helps the question and eliminate the guesswork involved in that particular individual’s health condition.
