What is a Tortuous Colon?

In order to fit in your abdomen, a colon that is longer than normal has to create twists and turns.  This is referred to as a Tortuous Colon. Tortuous Colon is a congenital abnormality that you are born with and many have no idea they have it.  It is more common in women than in men and usually appears around the age of 50. It is not necessarily dangerous, but can cause inflammation and symptoms that are usually diagnosed as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  There is, however, an increase risk for the flow of stool to completely stop causing an obstruction at some point.  If this condition is acute and life threatening (such as a blockage), emergency surgery may be required.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain in lower left side of abdomen
  • Colon spasms
  • Distended abdomen
  • Constipation

A Tortuous Colon presents a challenge during a colonoscopy because the twists and sharp angles make it hard to get the endoscope all the way through. Other testing such as x-ray or MRI can detect this disorder.

Implementing healthy lifestyle habits and eating clean are necessary to avoid complications.  A diet high in fiber, daily exercise such as walking, drinking plenty of water, chewing your food longer to help with digestion are suggested for the best outcomes.  Avoiding dairy and gluten can also be helpful.  Keeping inflammation down is vital to all aspects of your health but especially in your colon.
