The Proper Testing for Thyroid Dysfunction

Thyroid blog

One in five women are affected by thyroid dysfunction and half of these women are undiagnosed.  The standard approach to testing for thyroid includes a somewhat limited blood testing called TSH, but in order to truly understand the specific cause of the individual’s thyroid dysfunction, more detailed testing should be provided.  In addition, thyroid dysfunction is often a deeper problem.  There are other systems in the human body that can indirectly and directly affect the health of the thyroid.

Testing

As a Science-Based Wellness Physician, I provide a high level of analysis using the gold standards of testing, specifically blood, hair, urine and fecal.  Thorough thyroid testing includes Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3 (rT3), Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody (TPO), Thyroxine Binding Globulin (TBG), Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin Antibody (TSI), T7 (Free Thyroxine Index) and TBII (Thyroid Binding Inhibitor Immunoglobulin).  In addition, other tests that are specific for thyroid function may include Vitamin D blood test (25-Hydroxy), Vitamin B12 blood level, Magnesium, Zinc, Iodine, Selenium, Iron and TgAb (Antithyroglobulin Antibody).  One must also consider the health of the liver as the inactive form of thyroid hormone called T4 is converted to the active form of thyroid hormone called T3 in the liver.  If the liver is unhealthy this conversion will be impeded.

In addition, testing will evaluate other nutritional deficiencies, illnesses or tendencies toward disease even before the symptoms have manifested and that may in the future create thyroid dysfunction.  With this valuable information we are able to make specific dietary supplementation and lifestyle recommendations customized to the individual and we are also able to monitor their progress through retesting to determine if, in fact, their plan for achieving a healthier life is going in the direction of health.  This avoids more aggressive means of managing or treating the thyroid and takes into consideration that each individual is different and unique and we must obtain an objective “fingerprint” through testing and blueprint plan to achieve a healthier thyroid and heal the root cause of the thyroid dysfunction and not just cover up or stop the symptoms.
